When someone buys a home, the main water riser is usually the last thing on their mind. But it should be one of the first. Old galvanized pipe corrodes from the inside out - slowly restricting flow, building up scale, and eventually failing at the worst possible time. That's exactly the situation this Sacramento homeowner was dealing with.

Here's what we were working with: a worn-out galvanized riser coming out of the ground, corroded fittings, and no clean shutoff options to speak of. It was the kind of setup that works until it doesn't - and when it goes, it can mean no water to the whole house while you scramble for an emergency fix.

We walked the homeowner through a few solid options before landing on a full copper rebuild. Copper is the right call here - it's durable, it resists corrosion, and it gives you a clean, reliable riser that's built to last. We rebuilt the main water riser from scratch, installed new ball valves so there's a proper shutoff for the house, and added a dedicated irrigation shutoff so the sprinkler system has its own independent control. No more sharing a corroded valve between the house supply and irrigation.

The difference between before and after tells the whole story. A tangled mess of old galvanized fittings got replaced with clean copper runs, solid brass valves, and an organized layout that actually makes sense. Everything was pressure tested before we called it done. Running great.

New homeowners especially benefit from taking care of something like this early. You don't want to inherit someone else's deferred maintenance and find out the hard way what it costs when it fails. Getting ahead of it - especially on the main water line - is just smart ownership.
